What Are Hemorrhoids?
Simply put, hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and around the anus. There are two classifications of hemorrhoids; internal and external. In most cases, internal hemorrhoids do not hurt or cause discomfort. On the other hand, external hemorrhoids can be a significant source of pain, itching, and general irritation in the anal area.
What Causes Hemorrhoids?
It’s important to remember that hemorrhoids are extremely common and most people will experience them at some point in their lifetime. Heredity can make certain individuals more susceptible to hemorrhoid development.

Go To The Bathroom As Soon As You Need To
As a final note on preventing hemorrhoids, always go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge to pass a bowel movement. Ignoring the urge to go to the toilet can cause your stool to dry up and make it more challenging to move your bowels later on.
How To Treat Hemorrhoids
While hemorrhoids certainly feel like no laughing matter, they typically resolve themselves without medical intervention. However, if you are in extreme pain or discomfort, you should see your doctor to rule out any other causes.
When it comes to treating hemorrhoids at home, you have a few different options. Depending on how severe your symptoms are, use any or all of the methods described below. Always remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This saying rings especially true in the case of hemorrhoids.
Wipes and Creams
Wipes and creams containing witch hazel are a great way to reduce pain and itching associated with hemorrhoids. If you use a cream that contains hydrocortisone, don’t use for more than a week without an okay from your doctor.
Warm Baths
If you’re experiencing pain or itching, a warm bath may help. It is essential to keep the affected area clean to foster healing. Also, the warm bath may encourage increased blood flow and decreased swelling.
Try soaking for a minimum of fifteen minutes a few times a day. This method is particularly useful directly after bowel movements. To avoid increased irritation use unscented soap and do not scrub the area.
Painkillers and Ice
